Web Hosting Defined

In order to work on the internet as a business or as a hobby, you have to be able to access to a piece of cyberspace. The only way to own a piece of cyberspace is to get it from a web hosting provider.

A web host is a company owns tons of computers which connect directly to the internet. These computers are called servers and they are given IP numbers so that they can be found by all the other computers which are connected to the internet.  The servers store all of your web files, which can be HTML files (web pages), graphic files, CSS files, Javascripts or whatever.

To put it very simply is that when you type a web address (www...?) into the address bar on the top of your brower, then hit enter, your browser will send out a 'request' to open up that webpage.  The 'request' will travel across the internet to the web server and it will attempt to locate the web page on that server. If the request is a success (web page exists) then that web page will open up in your web browser.

As expected nothing in life is free so of course the web hosting companies charge a fee to store, configure, maintain and serve your web pages to to internet.  So you can expect to pay a monthly or yearly fee to the web hosting company to save your web files to their web server (uploading), and for them to allow them to serve them up to the internet (downloading).
