An Easy Comparison Of
Shared, Dedicated, and Virtual Privater Servers

Shared Web Hosting (Family)
The simplest way that to explain the difference between these three types of web hosting is by describing it through a scenario.  Lets look at it like peoples living arrangements and compare it to that.  Shared hosting is best described as a living in a family.  First think of your house or apartment and all of the space in it.  Now of course everyone in the family has a certain amount of space within that house because you all live together and you have to share that space right.  Think of your bedroom as your personal space you buy your own stuff and put it just in there. Of course, you need to be considerate with other people, so you can just go throwing your stuff around the rest of the house where other people live. You cannot just occupy every space in the house or others will not be happy and complain. That is basically what a shared hosting service is. You are sharing a server with other people, sharing its resources and when someone uses more resources (such as bandwidth) than yours, you get affected. Because it is "shared" it is the cheapest among the three different types of.

Dedicated Server (You own your own place)
Dedicated is best described as you have your own place, you are the master of your own domain.  Your place is dedicated to only you, you can put your stuff anywhere you want to can use as much electricity, water, and anything else that you can think of because No one else lives in the house but you. You can buy a lot of stuff, put it in there and no one will complain. But of course because you live by yourself you are responsible for all the higher cost of living because you are not sharing it with anyone else.  Dedicated hosting is one of the most expensive among the three.

Virtual Private Server (A house with a suite)
Ok now the other two are a bit easier to explain compared to this one.  Now the easiest way to explain it in our living scenario is by looking at Virtal Private Servers (VPS) as owning a house with a suite in it or having a place where you have a room that absolutely no one can go into.  The house is split between an upstairs and a downstair and you live upstairs and you have a tenant living downstairs.  Now you are still technically sharing the house with other people but they can not get into your area and use or stuff and you can not access their area.  The spaces are completely separate although the house is still shared.  Neither of you care whether you put a lot of stuff in each of your space or not, because you have your own reserved space in the same house. You virtually have your own house, but actually you're sharing it with others but on better terms. Obviously, this one is more expensive than shared hosting but cheaper than dedicated server.
