A Dedicated Hosting Plan is a website hosting plan in which your website essentially owns an entire web server.  What you do with this server is completely up to you, so you can host large high traffic websites without having sharing hard drive resources, CPU, or bandwidth with any other website in the world.  With dedicated hosting you can host unlimited domain names and customize the server to your specifications by choosing the amount of hard drive storage space, bandwidth, RAM, backup space, and by adding managed hosting services, selecting your own operating systems and control panel.

Dedicated webhosting does cost more money, but because you are paying more you receive more features and benefits. When you purchase a dedicated server you will be the only site on that server and will have your own IP address. A dedicated IP address used to be a requirement for Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) encryption, but some hosting companies now offer it as part of virtual private hosting (VPS) packages.

Because you have the server to yourself, dedicating hosting is more expensive. It's like owning a home instead of renting an apartment. Like any homeowner, your costs will be higher, but there are benefits to the arrangement:

  • Full Control: You don't have to worry about anyone else slowing down or crashing the server because you have full control on what happens within that space. 
  • Faster response with higher traffic loads. The server is faster because it will only respond to requests of information from your site. People will not have to wait in line to view your Web pages and images. 
  • Easier setups. You will find it easier to set up the server to handle anonymous FTP and SSL encryption because your dedicated server will have it's own IP address.
  • Unlimited Bandwidth. Dedicated hosting generally has no bandwidth restrictions because it's assumed you need a lot of bandwidth if you require your own server. Where as shared and VPS hosting you will sometimes pay a penalty if you go over your allotted bandwidth.
